  3. UK the Royal Society for the Protection of
  4. Birds, founded 1889, has a network of
  5. reserves in all types of habitat (73,000
  6. ha/180,000 acres), and is the largest
  7. voluntary wildlife-conservation body in
  8. Europe, with a burgeoning membership of
  9. 827,000 (1990) due to a greater awareness of
  10. wildlife conservation. There are 116 bird
  11. reserves in the UK. In Europe, societies such
  12. as the Spanish Ornithological Society are
  13. fighting to preserve sanctuaries for birdlife
  14. such as the Coto Donana where bird watchers
  15. can be sure of seeing rare wildlife in their
  16. natural habitats.
